 Challenge

With a mission to protect and support human rights defenders (HRDs) who are at risk as a result of their necessary human rights work, Front Line Defenders (FLD) was challenged with wanting to increase the visibility of HRDs, capture the collective power of their work, and highlight regional and global trends of barriers, backlash and violence facing HRDs. They also needed a way to share key information about their 2020 Frontline Defender Awardees and their subsequent annual report with a wide public audience.

 RC's Response

RC worked closely with the FLD team to create a collection of visuals for traditional and social media that balanced educating the general public about the barriers and violence HRDs face with showing the power and impact of their work, fight, and movement building. We conducted in-depth research about each HRD, their collectives, and how their groups connected to larger global movements for human rights, and used this information to craft multimedia imagery and text to tell elements of their stories.

Impact

The visuals were spread widely over social media and traditional media channels. They engaged a general audience, activists, and people with a strong interest in human rights defenders – providing an entryway for them to dig deeper into each HRDs work.

The human rights defenders stated that they felt the campaign honored the spirit of their work and were appreciative of the visual representation of the variety of cultures and heritages. The campaign received coverage from numerous international media outlets and were shared on billboards throughout Dublin.
